Local Group Proposes Structured Hitchhiking PlanNORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) - A group in Northampton is promotinghitchhiking as a way to conserve fuel. Under the plan, both drivers andpedestrians who participate would fill out an application. The applicationwould includes questions about their residential and driving status andcriminal background. Those who pass the screening process would be givenplacards indicating that they are part of the program. Drivers woulddisplay their placards somewhere on a window of their vehicle. Hitchhikerswould hold theirs up at designated stop sites. The placards would all havephoto identifications and numbers that would be registered in a data baseso that their authenticity can be verified. Although the project does notrequire official approval by the city, proponents are hoping for theendorsement of the council and the mayor. The Northampton proposal isbased on a system devised by residents in the bay area of California.

Lots of people used to hitchhike when I was a kid. It's a good idea.But suppose you don't plan on being a regular hitchhiker but have toanyway? No one would pick you up because you don't have a "placard".

So who needs a car?

I didn't think helium made one laugh. I thought it was nitrous oxide?

Right. Helium makes you sound like Donald Duck.

But, it can make yuou lightheaded, as it replaces oxygen. It's not as dangerous as other gasses, however, since it is lighter than air and escapes.

For those huffing Freon, that's heavier than air and does NOT escape!

Nope, I was flying to Keene, and elsewhere up the CT river valley just for fun. I sometimes also hit Orange, MA, and the occasional touch and go in Northampton. I live in central CT.
