Tercel Door Handle

Oddest thing happened to me yesterday: I went to the car, unlocked the drivers door and the handle snapped in two as I lifted it! The piece that came off is about 3/4 of the entire handle. Has anybody ever had this happen and is the replacement difficult?

Thanks.

It has never happened to me but I've seen cars that it has happened to.

Replacement is not difficult. When you get the new handle, also get the clip that attaches the handle to the rod because the clip is pretty inexpensive and is likely to break when you take it apart. You will need a

10 mm wrench, Phillips screwdriver, and some duct tape.

Raise the window all the way up and remove the interior door panel and the plastic sheet underneath. Don't worry if the plastic rips - you can repair it with duct tape when you put it back together. Unclip the rod from the handle - if the clip breaks, then you already have a replacement on hand. The handle is held in place with a couple of nuts, my guess is that they are

10 mm. Remove the nuts, pull the handle off from the outside, and reverse the process.

Yeah, what Ray said!

You will also see a round black dot about the size of a half dollar. If you peel this VERY CAREFULLY you'll be able to reseal it. That's the access to one of the 10mm nuts, the other is through the door (after you remove tha panel, of course!)

Thanks for your advice. It doesn't sound too difficult. I picked up the handle (which cam ewith a clip) from my local dealer last night who had it in stock. It cost CAD56 which wasn't too bad :) I asked about the frequency of the handle breaking and they said they get an occasional request but often enough that they keep 1 or 2 in stock. Tomorrow evening I'm going to do the job.

It's a 97 and, yes, I'd normally use a breakers except none of the local ones had a handle available. Anyway, I tried to remove the door liner today and found one screw inside the inner handle which I removed, I then pulled the liner from the front of the door, across the bottom but got stuck coming up the back of the door. Is there another screw in there somewhere?

Thanks.

Let's see if I can remember...it's been four years!

There are two .covers. you have to remove, they pop out with a screwdriver, and there are two large brass colored screws under them. I think there is aslo a screw in the little indentation you pull the door closed with...I don't think it has a cover over it, and there is a screw behind the hadle you pull to open the door. I believe that's it! Then you grasp the bottom, pull out until the panel frees, and then lift up.

You may want to remove the cover over where the mirror mounts to the door, but it's not really necessary.

And, while you're in there, replace the speakers with some 4 ohm 2 ways, 5 inches or so! ;)
