Just bought a 97 Camry from my folks. 56,000 miles, well maintained, in almost perfect condition. Got about 2 hours down the road and it threw a rod. The engine is ruined and will have to be replaced, according to the mechanic.
He was baffled as to why this would happen to such a reliable, well-maintained, low mileage car. The only thing he found was that my folks had been using Prompto to change their oil. He suggested that sometimes Prompto puts in the wrong oil filter. Would this cause a rod to blow?? There was no apparent oil leaking out, and the oil level was actually above the full line.
Anybody got any ideas?
