Check engine light

My 96 Tacoma CEL light just came on during a heavy rain storm. The code is P0510 " Closed Throttle Position Switch ". Truck runs fine. Any suggestions? Howard

501 refers to the idle contacts in the throttle position sensor, if I remember correctly. When the throttle plate closes, these contacts close to tell the computer that the vehicle is idling. Sounds like the computer is telling you that it is seeing that these idle contacts are closed all the time, even while driving, so this code has been set. I saw one of these a few years ago, and if memory serves I traced it to the throttle position sensor. Shouldn't be too hard for a decent tech to troubleshoot.

BTW. is it ok to drive for a while? Howard

Yeah, I doubt you'll have any driveability issues if you haven't already. The computer is ignoring the input from the TPS, so its fallen into a default mode where it won't run correctly, but it'll run enough to get you around. Get it checked sooner than later.
