ES300 shifts early when cold

I recently purchased a 1997 ES300 and I noticed it always tends to shift too early when it's not fully warmed up. You could be flooring it and it won't go past 3-4k rpm until it upshifts. When warm, it acts fine but it always shifts about 1k rpm before redline begines. I had a 97 Camry V6 before and I don't remember it doing this.

Any ideas?

This would happen if you're not getting enough power. Have you had a tune up lately? But it would have to be REALLY out of tune.

I had similar problems twice and it turned out to be bad spark plug wires the first time and a broken rotor cap the second.

Perhaps the ECU/TCU are trying to prevent excessive engine wear by preventing high RPM operation before the engine is warmed up?

It's called NORMAL operation. My 2003 Corolla does the same thing too.

Cold ATF does not affect shift points. In case you didn't know, the transmission shift points are controlled by its own ECU ... which uses engine coolant temperature to alternate between two basic shift programs.

Well Phil come to where it goes to -20, even at + 10 alot of things happen with dirty oil. at -15 last year I wouldnt shift... New oil and filter fixed it fine. Or didnt you know oil thickens when cold the colder the thicker it gets.

Sorry Ransley. ATF does not get fouled with carbon, acids, and gasoline. With lower temperatures, ATF thickens just like any other lubricant. This affects shift firmness only .... not shift points.

I spent 7 yrs in an automatic transmission shop overhauling and modifying automatics in RVs. Good chance I've forgotten much more than you know on the subject.

Dear sir .... 10w-30 is not used in automatic transmissions ... not in Minnesota (the correct spelling), not in January, or any other month.
