General tire pressure question

On the 6 cyl Camry SEs, with the Michelin tires, the manual states the pressure should be 29. Isn't this kind of low for a "performance" tire? The steering is light to begin with, wouldnt' a higher tire pressure make the steering lighter?

What do you guys keep your tires at ?

The tires in question are Michelin "Energy" tires, 16in rims I think. xxx/60R profile tire. Don't number the other number. These tires are sold at the Price Club/Costco.

Tire pressure is based on the tire size and the weight of the vehicle.

My '99 Camry LE V6 recommends 29 lbs on the doorpost. By 10,000 miles it became clear that was too low and I went to 32 lbs. The car came with Generals and when they wore out I replaced them with Michelin MX-V4s that seem to be wearing flat at 34 lbs. This is on a lot of in-town surface street and freeway use.
