Please help ; ignition problem for 95 camry

recently I got a weird problem on my 95 camry:

when I insert the ignition key and turn to position 2 ( only turn on the electrics without starting), if I pause for even one second, I will not be able to start it when turn the key to position 3 (ignition),

but if I insert the key and turn to position 3 directly, it will work,

I heard it is better to pause 2 secnond befor turning the key to position 3 from position 2 ( for the fuel pump to accumulate pressure)

could anyone tell me what is wrong with it? Thanks a lot.

It is not better to pause. If you have a failing fuel pump it is one way to keep it going for a while.

I fail to see how waiting for the fuel pressure to come up will cause it not to start or indicates a bad fuel pump. He said if he simply key in/twist to start it DOES start... No Check Engine lights?? No Transponder key on a '95... Logically, it sounds like something is disabling ignition/fuel inj. if you give it time to "boot up". Is there an old/unused/aftermarket alarm system on the vehicle? Maybe pull that piece o' crap off. If not, I'd go after the ignition lock itself, as they are a wear out part after about 10 years :) Check Autozones. Locally they have generic replacement ignition locks for $35-80 US$.....

Didn't say it did. I said there was no reason to pause. But if someone (not him) has a bad fuel pump, pausing might get the car started. That is probably where his urban legend of being good to pause came from.
