Rainy Jeep Camp Trip on the Colorado Backcountry Route

Plenty of overland trips I read about here finish with a ground tent on soaked dirt or a night in a pay campground. unown_shadow took the opposite path: a silver Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Recon kitted out for overlanding, run up the Colorado Backcountry route from Buena Vista toward Leadville, with camp set on the Leadville side of Weston Pass along Big Union Creek. That self-contained shelter and kitchen platform approach reads very differently from the usual ground-camp style most of us run.

The setup list is clean: an overland roof rack, all-terrain tires, rock rails, and a fold-out rooftop tent with an attached ground annex enclosure. A friend drove alongside in a second rig carrying a similar roof tent. Camp gear covered a green Coleman two-burner propane stove, a portable gas fire bowl that got used for roasting corn, a Jetboil container, folding camp tables, camp chairs, and a Mountain House freeze-dried food pack.

Two details stand out. This was the first outing with the 23 Zero tents, which the maker described as quite amazing, and the maker credits staying raised above the wet ground during the rain with lifting the whole experience. On the filming side, a GoPro Hero 5 handled the time lapse and most handheld clips, a Sony A7R2 covered some shots, and every drone view came from a DJI Mavic, all captured in 4K. unown_shadow has been very happy with that 4K quality.

One loose end: no fishing happened for the maker, though the friend pulled a couple of Brookies out of the water. Whether a return trip in drier weather turns that around is an open question.

The fold-out rooftop tent paired with the attached ground annex is the choice that grabs me. Keeping the bed up on the rack while still having an enclosed spot at ground level seems like a genuinely clever arrangement, and after a wet night up by Weston Pass I would want exactly that combination on my own rig.

Question about the camp itself: how did the rooftop tent and the annex handle being taken down after camping in the rain next to that running creek? I keep wondering whether everything had to go back on the roof and into the Jeep still damp.

unown_shadow has not said how the tent packed away after that wet camp. What is known is that this was the first trip using the 23 Zero tents, that the maker described them as quite amazing, and that being camped up on the roof while the rain fell is credited with improving the whole outing.

For a next run through that stretch I would build in an early fishing stop before breaking camp. The friend already showed the water holds Brookies, and a slow morning beside Big Union Creek looks like a fair window to try a few casts before the drive toward Leadville continues.
