I keep posting my message before it's ready---sorry for the multiple posts. I have the engine out of my 67 bug and have decided to have my trans rebuilt. I'm going to use German Transaxle in Oregon-anyone here used them? What's the best way to remove the rear wheel bearing and outer spacer? I suppose a pulling tool is needed for this procedure.I've gotten the trans out and outer bearing covers off, but the bearing and outer spacer are firmly lodged onto the end of the axle.New bearings have been ordered from Aircooled net,so I suppose I could destroy the old ones,but prefer to do it right-any suggestions? Fairly easy since you have everything out.
Unbolt the axle tube from the tranny side. Now, use a 3-arm puller to pull the tube over the axle. Put the arms on the bearing housing and the puller screw against the axle shaft end.
The bearing isn't usually a real tight press fit and the tube should slide right off.
