'68 Westy engine/body seal

Two questions.

  1. Two pieces arrived in the package. I assume the larger "U" shaped piece goes around the rear of the apron (front of the engine). Where does the smaller piece go?

  1. Is there a way to install the seal without removing the engine?

Thanks

Sorry I replied as e-mail! Here it is though: Mine were all T4 motors and the gaskets were 1 piece, but I was able to push it from above and reach from below and get it to lay smoothly all around. I suspect you should be able to do the same but you may need to get creative and make a tool to help (like bend a cheap, smooth butter knife aybe...!) -BaH

Fish,

From my old parts book:

111 813 741 D Rubber Strip - Engine cover plate, front, length 870mm - 1off 111 813 705 A Rubber Strip - Engine cover plate, rear - 1off

*111 813 707 Weatherstrip - Engine cover plate, rear (larger lips) - 2 off

I think the smaller piece is for the front of the engine (front is front of vehicle) ie runs vertically over the engine tinware The longer piece fits centrally into the removable rear engine panel, allowing the ends to slip into the horizontal sides, either of the engine. I cut my rear seal into three pieces: ie two bits for the side of the engine, one bit for the removable panel

Does this make sense?

You may have to remove the front tinware from the engine to install the seal onto the body.

Likely they sent you a universal beetle engine seal kit. The large U shaped seal will have to be sectioned into three parts if this is the case. One piece for the rear apron and two for the sides of the engine bay. I'd remove thje apron and old seal (if it exists) and compare. Otherwise just center the seal and trim the ends. Then take the trimmed pieces and use them to form the two side seals. The second seal is likely the seal that goes on the firewall...this one will be quite a PIA to attempt to replace with the engine in place. I would evaluate the condition of the present seal and if it is not too badly deteriorated plan a few other maintenance tasks for the engine while its out, such as thorough cleaning of cooling fins and seal replacement etc., and replace at your convienance. Part numbers or pics of your two seals can end the gueessing, however, and let us determine for sure what you actually have.
