72 VW van - original engine?

Every old van I have ever had, or seen, has had the doghouse style engine, but yesterday I saw one for sale in Toronto with the flatter

1600 fastback style engine with twin carbs - is that the one called "pancake"? The owner said it was the original engine, and he said it was 2 liter. Is he right? Were there some sold that way - in N. America?

There were many differences in engines supplied, depending on market.

In the US, '72 was the first year to use the "pancake" engine w/dual carbs. But....it's not a Fastback engine. This is the engine they stole from the ill-fated Type 4 car (411/412).

'72 was 1700cc. That grew to 1800cc and then 2000cc.

You are right as usual, thanks Jim.

The front pages of the parts catalogue show pictures of both types supplied as complete engines - the doghouse and the pancake.
