ok, i just finished pulling my tranny (still have oil on my hands OOPS!) and i was wondering if there is anyway to tell if the tranny is any good if its not in a running car? i have a 70' w/no engine and the shifter feels nice and tight, in the 69' im restoring the shifter felt really sloppy and loose...

.............Your '69 may need a new shift rod rod bushing (inside the tunnel near the shift lever at the front end of the shift rod) and a new shift rod to tranny coupling (under that removable plate that's under the rear seat).
Loose shifter won't tell ya much about the trans. Ya could drain the oil in it. Big hunks of gear teeth good sign its toast. Small shaving or really gross fluid maybe another indicator.
VW changed the shift lever right about that time. Early cars have much more lever throw, while late ones are much "tighter." Look at the shift lever mechanism. The different mechanisms are easy to spot; they even use different rubber boots.
This may be the only difference you are feeling.

Yup. it was just the bushing, looks like the PO never put a new one in! there wasnt even dust of one in there heh!
