another type 4 question

Jan 27, 2004 5 Replies

Hi All,

I have encountered an apparently good priced 2000cc type 4 engine and I was considering the possibility of changing the 1600cc of my 72 SB.

After reading previous posts here in ramva it seems that putting a type4 in a type1 isn't as simple as plug&play, right? it's just a matter of changing the flywheel? or do I have to do more modifications? Is there a website with pics where I can have a visual idea of this? What kind of power could I expect from a 2l type 4?

thanks Ant

Not exactly plug and play. You will need to swap to some type of upright cooling or start cutting on the engine bay to fit the stock cooler. Might have to fab a rear hanger too.

for some pix and specifics. Stock T4s make more horsepower than stock T1s but the big improvement is the torque you get. Makes driving stoplight to stoplight a lot more fun. Another good place to check out is shoptalkforums.com - lotta T4 guys hanging out there.

Yes, teh cooling system won't fit. There's a lot of expensive work to be done.

go to the shoptalkforums website, and their type 4rum.

70-80 hp Maybe 90 if it was from a Porsche 914.

The reason why some people (like me) do it, is that it is easy to get more power from it without sacrificing reliability. It has an oil filter from the factory too.

The parts are much, MUCH more expensive than T1 and there are not too many people around who really know them inside out.

Study the message board.
