anyone know the name of this part?

I have a fully restored 1971 Convertible Karmann Ghia. Just about everything on the car is perfect, but it's missing the battery car in the engine compartment. I have been told that they originally came with a metal cover that fit over the battery. They were commonly taken off because they were inconvenient and seldom put back on.

I have the original owner's manual, but it doesn't picture or mention anything about the cover.

Questions:

Do they 1) actual exist and 2) what's the part name and number?

Thanks!

The cover was discontinued when the 12V battery came out ('67). The cover doubled as a hold-down but the later batteries have a "foot" built in which gets clamped to the floor pan.

If you drive a beetle (which you necessarily do not),=20 you should have some kind of a cover there. Even if the battery is mounted to the floor. You can burn the back seat and the whole car if someone heavy enough sits on top of the battery with no battery cover. Short=20 circuit from the seat parts -> dry seat stuffing catches fire -> disaster.

The 12V batteries not only get held down by clamps on their "feet," but they also come with little insulating flaps that cover the + terminal. Nothing else is needed.

Well, mine does not. I've seen a lot of 12V batteries without any cover flaps or anything to insulate the +-pole.

I know it's watercooled...but my '92 Jetta has a flap on the battery's + post...and it's mounted in the engine compartment...

Do you see 2 or 3 small holes around the + terminal? If so, then these are where the cover would have installed. They are often lost by people who don't realize what they are for, sometimes even by the installer.

I have some old ones if you need one. There are only 2 kinds: 2 hole flap or 3 hole cover. If you have a battery recycling place near you, you can probably find one on a battery there. I think they come on all the Group 42, 43, and 44 batteries.
