Axle nut removal failure

Feb 18, 2004 14 Replies

Just to keep you posted (and Karl reliving his nightmares) I have yet to remove the right rear Axle nut on Walter... I tried a large Monkey wrench, a tube extender, and a chisel and a BF hammer... I am now going to get a Dremel cut in it and start weakening it until it snaps...

Yes, I bought a new one before i started messing with this one. I found a nut and bolt site in the same street as my favorite junkyard/parts place that even had them in their catalog. M24 castle nut for VWs, said in their price list. US$4.

Side question, can I upgrade the front axle nuts to the newer ones with an allen screw? I cant find the plates you a re supposed to replace....

There is no need to cut all the way through. Cut two slots in the nut

180 degrees apart. Do not cut all the way through. A cold chisel and a hammer will break the nut apart...or you could go get a nut cracker, although I don't know where you'd find one that big!:~)

I've never had any problem finding those. Have you tried Wolfsburg West?

:) will just keep cutting and hammering until it breaks...

they should have... shipping them to Chile is what kills me...

I am collecting a list of little bits and pieces I need to make one big order to the US...

I took mine out today, very loose and evidently used a lot of times...

Block the wheels, lock the brakes (adjustment stars all the way out), put the parking brake on, put a crescent wrench on the alt pulley nut and let it rest on the breastplate, and then get a fat friend to stand on your cheater pipe. Of course, you must first hit the nut a couple of times with a chisel.

If all this does not work, then bring the bug here, I'm really eager to use the oxy-acetylene equipment.

stars all the way out is nice idea... I broke a parking brake cable today trying to lock the wheels :)

I would go there in a heartbeat... but to the beach!

Been there, done that.

You are always welcome.

Just change the nuts? the spindle threads are the same?

Just checking, you're not thinking this nut has a reversed thread? It's a normal nut, anti-clockwise to undo.

But you probably allready new that...

Greetings, Gerrelt.

yes... no problem... (its the right one, the left one, normal threads also, came out with just the breaker bar.. way too loose)

Yes, the spindle thread is the same. I had a '63 that had the later allen screw type nut on it. I assume the PO did not change the spindle and I think Muir says you can do that too when he discusses the front brake procedure.

Did you try to heat up the nut with a torch, smack it a couple of times with a hammer and then try it again??

You're positive you are turning it the right direction ?

make sure the axle is not turning with it. If you try heat, remember to apply heat to the nut, not the axle.
