thinking of changing the shoes on my 02 plate 1.25 fiesta. the axle nut looked like it had a retaining cage around all sides of it so i opened up the cage and undid the nut only to find it is not one nut but about 6 thin nuts. in the end my socket is not deep enough to reach the last nut so i gave up, only to find the retaining cage arms snapped of when i bent them back over. then i had a feeling that i should of treated the cage and nuts inside as a larger nut and undo the hole lot? anyone know which i should of done?

you shouldn't have taken it apart, treat it as one nut, you will have to buy a new one !
they are not expensive from the dealers.
you shouldnt of touched it at all. taking the hub off that way you will disturb the wheel bearing and posibly require one of those shortly to. look under at the back of the hub where it bolts to the cross beam. There you will find 4 bolts either 13mm or 17mm depending on build. remove these 4 and take the hub off complete. this is a bit fiddly due to brake springs etc catching. Be careful with any ABS sensor wiring you may have to trace the loom back to disconnect it if you cannot remove it from the hub.
