Buying a bug or van in the USA

We've just moved to Kentucky, USA, and would like to buy a Bug or Van (Type 1 or 2). Where is the best place to get a rust-free car? Is it possible to got to Mexico, where they were made until recently, to buy one and then drive it back here?

Cheers, Marsh.

In general, you can not import a Mexican car to US as it won't pass Federal regulations. Sure, there may be some exceptions but you don't want to get involved.

Kentucky may have a few nice cars left. Arizona is the place to go for truly rust-free cars. Depends on your budget and time.

Suggest contacting the Kentucky motor vehicle office to find out beforehand what rules apply to transferring title from an out-of-state car. Each of our wonderful 50 states has its own rules to follow.

I have been asking around about importing my car from Finland to Florida, and I have found out that vehicles over 25 years old are not required to pass EPA or DOT safety tests. No need for any damn Euro/Usa conversions either, just bring it home and tag it.

I think a good deal of this is federal, not dependent on state.

If you were thinking of bringing in something that's younger than 25 years, your best bet is to find a local company that imports cars and performs the necessary EPA and DOT tests and conversions, and can process all the paperwork. It takes a well equipped lab...... can't do it yourself. Fortunately, there are plenty of companies that offer this service.

I talked with AAA SUNSHINE CAR IMPORT in Florida.

Yes it is all Federal requirement.

Please post all the gory details after you have succeeded in bringing your car over here.

I saw the restauration (fitting new frame) of your 2cv on his site. And i noticed the 2cv was running German (?) plates, am i correct?

Love the car, I think a 2cv is one of the three icons; Bug, Mini and 2CV. There might be many more but not European. :)
