Engine Comparisions?

How much is a power- speed- acceleration- peppyness differance between a 1600 stock and a 1776 engine with some slight mods (nothing big). Or just for referance a stock 1600 vs. 1776 (i think thats the right #) Does it make a differance in performance, and if so, how much?? Thanks ~Peace~Justin


there are some 1776's out there that run better than some 1914's, and even better than one 2276cc engine I've seen run. Those 1776's are an exception...but...then again there are 1600's I've seen that run unbelievably well...so...it's really not about 'slight mods' it's about what mods, and setting up a system, in which the 'mods' will work together....instead of fighting each other ( i.e. 1.5" exhaust and a holley bugspray 2bbl...they will fight eachother, and in some cases even lower performance.)

well, for comparision, i mean stock. Im looking at a bug that has a 1776 and im just curious about how much more peppyness it will get then a 1600. Thanks ~Peace~Justin

there is no such thing as "stock" 1776.

If you mean an engine that only has bigger cylinders, resulting in

1776cc of displacement and no other changes.. well.. all else being stock, it would not last very long, and/or it would run like crap.

You would need at least a bigger carb, or dual carbs.. a stock 34mm "1600" carb would work, and can work fairly well if all else was indeed stock (cam, heads), but you'd still have a rather restrictive exhaust system.. causing overheating and power loss. In other words.. it doesn't make much sense to try and build an otherwise stock engine with 1776cc displacement.

But to answer your question.. the bigger engine would be MUCH stronger.. starts off from red lights very "light", lots of torque.. very driveable.. nice behaving, strong engine. Top speed would not change, but you would get there much faster. Mainatining cruising speed even when going uphill would be much easier.. you can accelerate without changing to smaller gear.. etc.

It would still not rev like a "sportscar", the power would be in the "grandma" rpm range.. but there's be noticeably more of it to enjoy.

There are 150hp 1600 engines, and there are 80hp 1776cc engines.. ;)

.............My '77 bug with L-Jetronic doesn't get any vacuum advance until about 1400 rpm I think. That's with a new SVDA from Aircooled.Net.

That sounds more like the mechanical advance. I believe the SVDA has both. Vacuum advance should come in the instant the throttle is opened, before the RPMs come up.

Try this: Disconnect and plug the vacuum line running to the distributor and check the advance as the throttle is openned. If it is the same as you have been seeing, the vacuum advance isn't working and the advance you've seen at 1400 rpm is just the mechanical advance.

...............Hello Max. I did as you suggested and you're right, the centrifical advance starts coming in at maybe 1200(?) rpms. As for the vacuum advance, I must have been having a brain fart. It does come in right away just above idle speed. I can see it plainly with the timing light. Also, I discovered that my timing was at 10 deg BTDC instead of 7.5. Maybe, everything had to settle in after I installed this SVDA last week. Thanks for your help.
