Hints for difficult sliding door, 71 bus

The Wonderbus's sliding door is getting darn hard to open from the outside, and effectively impossible to open from the inside. A lot of force needs to be applied to turn the lever far enough to get the latch to unlatch.

Seeking hints on how to club this problem into submission quickly.

Hey Mike

start by greasing the track and look at the track wheels bottom and top. make sure all nuts and bolts are tight. and there should be a place to spray in white lithium grease. There are a few adjustments that can be made. I hope this helps, sorry I can't be more help but I'm a hands on repairer and with out seeing that the problem is causing it to open hard.

Hi Mario,

Thanks for the suggestions -- I probably wasn't clear with my original question. The door slides fore and aft just fine. It's getting it to unlatch without putting nearly all your body weight on the handle to turn it that we are having trouble with.

But then again, maybe you did answer the question -- would binding track wheels (the top one moves easily) cause the latch to be hard to unlatch?

Mike - I think there's a good article on this at Type2.com. Bentley handles it pretty well also. Be careful with that inside handle - they crack radially and are getting hard to find! Me thinks you just need to lube things a bit, but it may also be an adjustment issue - they have adjustments for just about everything. -BH

The link to Sliding Door maintenance at Type2.com no longer goes to the intended page. Oh well. Thanks for the advisory on the risk to the inside knob. I think working on the door will be this weekend's bus-job.

I just used the Wayback Machine a few months back for the exact same page. I'm willing to host the page if anyone knows how to update the link.
