How 'bout a great engine stand design?

I'm looking for a design that does everything. Hold the short block for assembly, hold the whole works and keeps the big socket on for the flywheel torqueing. And lets you add a bell-housing for turning an engine over for a compression test. Oh, and it would be nice if this all could attach to a floor jack to install the engine or lift it to a nice working level. a DIY project? am I a dreamer?

I haven't seen a device that can do everything that you described, but here is a link to a bell housing add-on that allows you to start-up the engine.

Look at the last two pics. As for a lifting the engine to a higher level, I recall a Hot VWs or VW Trends article that was submitted by a reader. The article showed plans for how to lift an engine from floor level to engine stand in a couple of steps using boxes stacked on top of each other. The mag issue was maybe 10 years ago.

I found the HotVWs article from April 2000 that has a DIY plan for making two boxes from plywood so that one person can lift an engine with a floor jack up to the level of a rolling engine stand. That distance is about 26 inches above the floor. In a nutshell, the engine is lifted onto the first box, then that box is lifted onto the second box. The yoke attached to the engine is now at the correct height so that the rolling engine stand can be mated to it.

Here's a jpg image of the HotVWs contents page for that issue.

The article is on page 70. You can buy a back issue for $8.

guess is that someone on the WWW would be willing to part with it for less than $8.
