I took my 70 Bug in to be inspected today and the guy couldn't figure out how to put it into reverse. In the end, I drove it into the inspection bay but he never did test the brakes (the most important thing to inspect IMHO). Oh well, I think for old cars they don't make much $ doing inspections so they don't care to much.
I'm not sure if I should be amused...

I have to ask my tester if I want sonthing testing / inspecting ! Most of the time, he puts my car up on the ramp, and leaves me to check anything I want too ., and prints out my pass at the end. Only because he knows me well, and I make sure my cars are well maitained beyond test standard. (which is really pretty low in the UK) If I bring him a car that is new to me I can get a full test if I want.
Its not the way it should be, but its better than when some traders cover up faults to get through the test !

Your bug wouldn't even need to be inspected here in NC(not A good thing).I'm sure your right most shops wouldn't make any money off from older cars so they don't want to waste there time. Makes you think that the safety inspections are just to generate $$$$ $=2E

No inspections here in CA. Received my registration in the mail, send proof of insurance and money and that's it. Its also exempt from smog.
