I made contact!

It's always neat to see another aircooled owner, especially when they live down the street from you!! I had seen the lower half of what looked like a bug in a fellah's garage. Today I went by in my 68' and saw some legs dangling out from underneath. I tooted my horn, and he came down to the street for a conversation.

This guy was restoring a 78' that had belonged to his father. Aparently he had wrecked it once in his youth, and he was now restoring it and turning it into a cutom turbo style job. From the street I could see chrome. LOT's of chrome! California style. He mentioned that he had dropped a four barrel carb' into it. Looked pretty nice. It was a vert' too.

At any rate, it's nice to meet other air-cooled owners ... in Ohio ... that are still fairly young like myself.

Trivia point: that ain't "restoration."

REALLY not restoration.

BWAAAA HAAAA HAAAA! Serves him right. He's going to get maybe 12MPG and it will run like shit. So he's there in the garage boltin on all that crap without a clue or even a real test ride. Do yourself a favor and take him with a ton of salt. Maybe pour it on him first cause I suspect he's a slug.

Yeah, I shouldn't say "restoration" when he is basically recreating the Mexibeetle. :-) He stuck his head into mine and said "I've never been in one of these that were all stock!". He asked what kind of engine I 'dropped into it'. When I told him it was a 1500cc he about crapped himself. I patted the dash and said "I had her up to 65 today!". He says, "I had mine up over 200 once ... with the top down ... it was nice". It was a pretty nice looking ride, but I am a much greater fan of the original German engineering. They knew what they were doing better than those hot-roddin' Californians.

Nice to see we have such open minded people on this NG!

As far as I'm concerned he has the right to restore it how the hell he wants. I don't own a bug to follow the conventions.

Don't leave your head so open your brains will fall out.

Hey, I am all for freedom, and I reserve the right to be amused by certain things like the car that just sits in the garage, undriven, being layerd in chrome engine parts like a Christmas tree, with a 4bbl carb, untested by a guy who claims to have driven a bug to 200mph.

Being California, its probably in KM per hour, so considerably less, although still a fair old lick for a bug...

Steve,

As a point of interest, that truly is not a restoration. Renovation, innovation, desecration, any and all of these (and more) may apply, and yes, everyone may, with the blessing of most here, customize their rides most any way s/he sees fit...but that ain't a restoration.

To call it "restoration" is no big deal, until he tries to SELL it as "restored". At that point it would be grossly misleading. Plus any time he tries to "talk VW" with some better informed car enthusiasts.

Well fine, if you want to be pedantic about it and assume that restoration means factory restoration then I agree with your definition. He could be restoring it to how it was when he drove it, chrome and all! Whatever.

John means well. He's just a little uptight. Maybe he just needs to get laid. ;-)

Did you know that the adapter that Kennedy's conspicuously does NOT make is the Harley BT - 2 - VW tranny? Is that a friggin bummer or what? I'm getting too arthritic to keep handcranking my Bugs. A kickstarter would be nice.

I'm in Columbus/Grove City area myself. Although, I drive around quite a bit diong training. In fact, I have been doing classes up in Tiffin. Not too far from you Sandusky folks. I take 23 N to 53 E. It's a far cry off from Sandusky, but I think it would get me there if I kept on 53 past Tiffin.
