looks like a 68 and newer type 2(bus/transporter) and not the 12" tall with 10MM thread 1956-1961 beetle shifter.
The contortions neccessary to get that thing out of 2nd or make my arm hurt just trying to decide the mechanics of it.
Seems like you'd have to pull it up, let go once in neutral, reverse your grip, then push it into 3rd. Wonder how many miles of travel it takes before your passenger gets tired of being smacked with your elbow.
