New carburettor- At least for me.

I have a slightly cleaner one that needs choke element & cutoff, which I can send you for postage if you like ? Roughly ?15 ?

Hi Chris,

I think that the idle circuit is blocked. I took the bypass out more then 5 turns with no success. The issue must be on the small hole on the bottom of the carb. I do think that even if I can clean it, it will never perform as it should. I blow the thing out with compressed air. I saw solvent coming out, but I don't know if it was enough and from all the four holes. Today is Valentine day so I will not mess with the carb :-)

Is it working fine? I think that the price of sending from UK to Portugal until 5Kg is about 15 euros.

I don't know the working status, unfortunately, it came in a bunch of stuff I bought. I will get a picture & post it later. Will also give the throttle shaft a wiggle also. Hopefully with the pair, you can get one complete.

The small parcels limit is 2KG, will try & get under this, for the 15 Euro rate.

email me offline if you want to continue ...

James,

Thanks for helping me on this issue. I do believe that a carb that stays for a long time without working will get the passages blocked by the corrosion and they will never perform right. Speedy, you have a lot of experience on these issues, so I would like to see your opinion on this.

I think you have two choices for a stock 34mm carb. Either plunk down the bucks for a Pierburg and pray it's not a dud. Or have your good core rebuilt by someone like Chard's Carbs (Richard Carey advertises at the Samba). I just got mine back and I'm impressed with the appearance. I won't be able to install and test it until May when I bring my buggy back from my other place. They clean the entire thing spotless, then rebush the throttle and fix the throttle pump check ball seat which are usually damaged due to corrosion.

Thanks for the advice. I will try to blow it harder. If I put acid used to remove concrete from the floor on it, could clean it or destroy it? Could you show a picture of your carb?

Do you know any Gold/Silversmith localy? Sometimes if they are into the art scene, and make their own jewelery they will have UltraSonic cleaning baths, that might just be big enough to take the lower part of your carb.

Nothing mystical, ultra sonic "sound" wawes created in a liquid solvent(Water and dishwash detergent(The liquid type) often works very well)).

Cleans like nothing you ever have seen!

muratic acid will definitely clean it....the surface will be clean because it will be new metal exposed... back when i raced circle track we were required to run the holley/webber progressive carbs from a ford pinto(same basic car that some try to use on vw's)...used to pull em out of junkyard piles all the time....used to dunk them briefly in muratic acid cut with water.(50/50)....and i mean *BRIEFLY*....put the carb body on a wire hanger and drop it in....ten seconds or less pull it out....looked new...BUT it does nothing for the passages(not enough time to work) and it can really bugger up any threads in the metal...those threads are thin and the aggressiveness of the muratic acid(even cut equally with water) can eat the threads away completely in little time.....i'd leave that alone...

What are the passages that I have to blow or put WD-40 to see fluid coming through the idle drillings. I think in my case since it doesn't idle the most important is the one that is on the bottom. The one we can see with the throttle plate closed.

An optician should have them too, they use it to clean the glasses. Works very well, the good ones are very expensive though. I have one (cheapy) and it runs on 2 1.5V batteries. Not really a must have compared to the 'real thing'.. Only used it once with half full batteries (or was it half empty). Didn't do much good then..

I'd say soak it in WD 40 for a while and than blow it out hard. Repeat if needed, you'll get there!

I used thinner to clean it and it didn't dissolve :-) I think that here they also use thinner.

IT IS WORKING!!!

Today I blow the carb but I only removed the main jet. When I arrived home I put a bit of WD-40 through the main jet hole and next carb cleaner. I assembled everything again and it idle. I also putted a bit of WD-40 on the cut off valve. I do think that the problem was on the idle cut-off valve. I went for a ride to test it and I have a little hesitation from idle and at middle rpm the engine didn't accelerate has must as it should. Now I have another problem. The carb is not correctly jet. I have 125 on Main jet and 80Z on the air correction. Haynes says that I should have 130 on main and 60z on air correction. The pilot jet is 55 but I can also try 60. The jets I have make the car run lean. WHY? It's obvious that this carb came from US California and maybe from the bottom of the ocean like Remco said :-) Rich FYI the spring is repositioned :-) You can see on the throttle lever the flange for the throttle valve return dumper device only used on US California as far as I know. I need jets and I don't know how to get them. I live in Portugal and I have to find them. Jan where are you?!?!

Looking great!! You have the skills of an archeologist, cleaning it up like that.

Aircooled sells jets, I think. Should you find them, again, my offer of using my house as a relay post office stands.
