If you are serious about munging your address you should check your From: header too. Spambots don't just harvest from the body of messages. Plus many newsreaders quote the From: line in replies like this. I'm not sure if you can mung (munge?) that bit with Google Groups though.

You do realize, that by putting your email address in it's unprotected state in the HEADERS, you're not hiding ANYTHING from the spammers!

Go into your account preferences and quickly change your email info. there so that it is different... Right now, you carefully "hid" your true email address in the body of the message, but in the header area it plainly states:

From: "Bill Berckman"

Note, I didn't write it as it currently shows, since that wouldn't be helping you any! It's certainly there without the dashes and tildes.

You can always put COMPLETE gibberish in your account settings, and then put the "protected" contact information in your signature lines. Just look at how my message appears, for example.

I got my first spam e mail from Pay Pal urging me to update my account information. Only problem is that I do not have a Pay Pal account

.....Never respond to any email about updating anything.......ever. Another precaution that I believe in is to almost never open an email attachment, no matter who it's from.

If you've been with AOL for a long time, you're in for a lot of these types of spam now that you're out in the real (cyber) world.

AOL does a good job of blocking spam. I have a spam folder I never look at and I hardly get any junk mail. Use to I would get alot of junk mail when I was in AOL Chat Rooms. I am upset AOL dropped Newsgroups.

And you just posted ANOTHER message here in usenet with your email account clearly provided in your header... You are really opening yourself up for lots of SPAM!

I went to Google preferences, and could not find a way to hide your e mail. It is shame that you have to hide it, when someone might actually want to get in touch with you about something VW related.

That's 20 too many! I've had my account for quite a long time and still have yet to receive my first SPAM email message! Being very careful helps a lot...

Anyone can ask for a private email to be sent to them by providing a valid addresses that I can send to... that's all it takes. Otherwise, if someone sends me a private message out of the blue, then this is basically unsolicited email and that's what I'm trying to avoid.

If I think I'd be willing to establish an off-forum conversation on some topic, it's up to me to initiate it after consideration of whether the other person is someone I've come to know from posts here. Otherwise, I'm just opening myself up to all sorts of grief that I've been able to avoid so far. 99% of discussions can and SHOULD just happen here in this forum. If someone here and I were negotiating the buying or selling of something, then certainly it should happen in private... but so far I've not had to ever discuss anything privately that started here as a thread.

No SPAM in my email is a real treat and I don't want to give it up... (not saying you are a SPAMMER, of course -- I'm speaking in general terms)
