Congratulations! I've been driving mine around some too but I'm really ticked off at my carb so I snatched it off today, ripped it apart and it's soaking at a neighborhood repair shop. Hard to find those carb cleaner buckets we used to have. Sombody must have decided carb cleaner was causing cancer or something.

Just curious, did your DMV need a vin number or how did you arrive at the '70 VW thing. Mine is a '66 type III frame with a fiberglass body. If I run the vin number, my insurance folks said it came back as a early 70's BMW. They just insured it as a '66 VW and let it go at that (liability only). The DMV ran the number and since it didn't come back as stolen, they really didn't care what it was supposed to be.

I'm paying taxes on it now, so I'm contributing to the same stuff that everyone else who drives their vehicle on the road is. I'm gonna thrash this vehicle until it breaks and love doing it, and then fix it when it breaks and thrash it some more. I just hope that a cop never tries to pull me over to write me a ticket just as I'm pulling off of a road to hit a trail... because I have a funny feeling I might have to find out if he can keep up with me offroad if that happens. Even if he's driving a jeep or a hummer or anything else. :-D Not trying to be a smart@ss or troublemaker... I'm just still a little worked up over getting a capable offroad vehicle again that I can have some major fun with. Now what's up with "SUNEDAY?" That like a combination of Sunday and Dune Day? I'm slow. :)

The numbers came off the tunnel, right under where the rear seat would have been in the stock type III. For a '66, the numbers should have started with 316 but mine says 366. The 316 plus the other 6 numbers shows up as a BMW. 366 plus the others comes back as a vw dasher, forgot which year but the insurance and the DMV folks are happy so I am too.

I'm not sure about that. I haven't checked the numbers at the base of the generator stand but I was told that the engine was from a '71. Good chance that the transaxle also came from the same vehicle. To be clear about it, I don't really care what year car the parts came from but if you're interested and can tell me how to check then I'll look.

it is an "IRS" rear setup....so i just figure the "1970" part of the title is probably from the pan that the torsion housing was cut from(assuming its not a custom torsion housing)...so if your parts are stock for a 70 then the brakes/axles/diagonal arm/etc would be those.....may need to know that some day....at least a starting point, cause the pimple faced dude at advance won't know what you have when you toss it on the counter and say "i need a new one"....

It has 5 lugs on the front wheels and 4 on the rear wheels. Does that help? HAHAHA! :-D It's a mixed-up bunch of parts, but they seem to be working really well together so far. I think I'd have hit 90 mph on the way to work this morning except that I kept having mental images of those formula cars that catch a breeze under them and get flipped all over creation. :-) Kinda made me back off a little bit. Hmmm... maybe a big wing on the front end to help hold it down... Something like this picture, only up front...

i had noticed that in the very first post....seems the rail was well built for its intended purpose....it is said that the linkpin front suspension(same as you had in your baja) is much stronger than the balljoint front suspension of the later cars....the "IRS" rear suspension is "better" than the swingaxle rear in a few ways that are good for offroad..one being the camber issues that the swingaxle has....and hey you won't pinch those pesky axle boots......anyway, "mutt" or purpose built(my vote goes here) my response was based on it being "titled" as a 70 and having the rear suspension of same vintage...thats all...

Oh,..........and about that wing thang. It doesn;t need to be that large for your purposes. A 2 foot wide, slight angled piece of plate accross and above the leg area will make a huge difference. But it's still gonna feel reeeeeally light in front no matter what, compared to anything you have had before.

I saved a link about a manxter buildup you should look at their brake setup..............I think it's on the second page. A Sweeeeet Buggy in the works. I'd love to buy it! Take a look.
