Opinions on non-adjustable points?

Aug 06, 2003 3 Replies

My '68 Westy and I are back from a looong, problem-free road trip (~8k mis) from New Orleans to Vancouver Island with many side trips. The van ran beatifully with only a tuneup and brake work during the trip. Since I don't enjoy setting points, I am considering looking into the non-adjustable version for my 009 distributor. Any thoughts on the wisdom of this? The engine is a freshly rebuilt 1600.

and what is the lifespan of a set of points and condensor? J

I've blown my pertronix one twice. All from silly operator error. Don't ever mix up coil- with B+. It'll fry it immediately... even just brushing the leads by accident while working on the engine (that's how I fried 'em).

Other than operator error on my part, I find them to be very stable on the timing light over the rpm range. Not bouncy as it was with points. They're driving my new MSD 6A CD-ignition box with no problems, too.

I have heard that the very early Pertronix modules had issues, but I believe that they fixed that over 10 years ago. I have used an allison ignition for over 15 years and 250,000 miles, and on another vw a compufire for 6 years and 100,000 miles and have never had to use the stock points I keep as a back up.

Oh, no wait I did use them once. To fix a chicks bug that was broken down on the side of the freeway. Her stock points were so shot that the tungsten pad did not even exist anymore. The moveable arm was half eroded away, amazing it was working at all.
