OT: Wrap your brains around this

I just took my final exam for my philosophy class and the last two questions were... umm... interesting. 20 minutes after sharing with Jan he's still trying to figure out the first one. So give these a crack. The second one is much easier than the first if you ask me.

____________________________________________________________________ Five workers A, B, C, D, and E are standing in a single-file line. C is ahead of B in line. E is behind A in line. D is between B and E in line. Each of the following statements is sufficient to determine each worker's position in line EXCEPT:

A. B is two places behind A in line B. D is immediately ahead of A in line C. E is two places behind D in line D. A is two places ahead of E in line ______________________________________________________________________

During the summer session at Coleville Community College, six different courses - art, biology, calculus, home education, English and French - are offered. There are five class periods during the day, and each course, must be offered exactly three times during the day. Only calculus and home education will be offered during the first period. French and three other classes will be offered during the second period. Only biology will be offered during the third period. More courses will be offered during the fourth period than during the fifth period.

If biology is not offered during the fifth period, all of the following must be true EXCEPT:

A. Biology is offered during the second period B. Calculus is offered during the fifth period. C. Home education is offered during the fifth period. D. Home education is offered during the second period. E. English is offered during the fifth period.

2 string combinations: CB, AE 2 Possible layouts: CBAE, AECB

Insert D, between B & E in both situations

4 Possible layouts: CBDAE, CBADE, AEDCB, AECDB

B,C,D options are sufficient. The answer is A

2 string combinations: CB, AE 4 Possible layouts: Sequential (CBAE, AECB) or Interwined (ACEB, CABE)

Insert D, between B & E in both situations

6 Possible layouts: (CBDAE, CBADE, AEDCB, AECDB) & (CAEDB & CABDE)

Given the 6 possibilites. Each phrase would tell you which of the 6 possible layouts is correct. Except A: because it is not possible B,C,D options are sufficient. The answer is A

Are you sure it's A? Because I see you posted 3 times... This is one of those that once you get started, you absolutely CAN NOT leave it alone until you're sure you cracked it. A is only half the answer. Try again.
