Definitely sounds like a worn shifter bushing (like in your link). Here's an excellent page that walks you through the replacement:

The bushing goes in the bracket shown here:

... just to the rear of the shifter.

It'd probably be a good idea to replace the coupler at the rear under the access plate while you're at it ... or at least inspect it, as you'll be working in that area also.

Thanks for the info. Do you know where I can get the coupler? I have a set screw for it (do I just need one or two screws?) but motorworks.com is out of the coupler itself.

Also - should the bracket be replaced at the same time as the bushing or does that usually last?

Pokin my nose into this one as well:

The original german bracket and screw are WAY better than the standard aftermarket replacements. I reuse the screw and bracket, and utilize only teh rubber, maybe the tube from the aftermarket replacement kit. I try to reuse the original tube too when possible. They're worth saving.
