Removing Vent window glass?

On my '71 Super Beetle, I need to replace the window "latch/lock".

In order to properly replace this, I need to remove the wing window glass to gain access to the rivets.

Anyone have any tips for getting the glass out (short of a hammer?!)?

Thanks, Larry '71 Super Beetle - "Herman"

I have never read/heard of any easy way to remove the glass from the frame, would also like to hear if there is one.

When I did this job, I took the vent windows out of the doors, which is quite a lot of work. You could drill out the rivet at the top pivot, and pull the glass w/frame out, but then you will need new rivets. The ones I bought from west coast metric and rocky mt a few years ago were both the wrong size. I had to go to lowes or home depot for some stainless steel pop-rivets, and even they were slightly oversized thus requiring some drilling of the pivots.

Once out, if you pull the frame apart slightly (don't kink/bend it), that ought to be enough to be able to get the glass out ( but it will still require some effort). Buy new seals of course when re-installing the glass.

Slowly apply moderate heat to the frame and you can pull the glass out.

Yes it breaks easily if you get lots of heat in just one spot. Maybe put it in the oven? I dunno. That's how I did it. Of course you can try to pull it cold.

Try to slide the window backwards out of the frame. I have removed a couple of them in the past without any special difficulty (allthough they were from a standard beetle). The reverse procedure is used to install the window. Try some soap water to lubricate the window seal if it is very tight.
