... on a 59 VW bug. I used the Bentley shop manual to installed all the hardware per spec. And wouldn't you know it, I put transmission oil and two days later it started leaking from both rear wheels. Kind of slow on the driver side, a little faster on the passenger side. The one major thing that change was the washer. On a 59 the order starting from the outer is a washer, seal, spacer, small o-ring, washer, bearing and big o-ring, and lastly a washer.
Any idea what when wrong?

Sorry, i dunno what went wrong, but i'm eager to find out too. I'm facing the same problem but not that much. The rims get dirty after dust getting a hold on the dried oil. Luckily it is leaking on the rims in stead of the brakes... the way it did earlier... not torque the #36 nut at the right specs might be a possibility. But i used more torque and it is still leaking

On my '65 I replaced the seals once already and they still leak.... onto the brakes... I thought I'd solved it (at first) because the PO had put a '70s bug component in to hold the seal... so found the correct part and put it together.... leaks there AND around the boot a little.
I wonder if the boots start to lead due to the stress caused by the swing axle when one lifts up the car (on a jack)?
