Stereo in glove box of 1960 Bug.

Does anyone know of an online source to purchase a glove box for a modern stereo in a 1960 bug?

If the '60 bug glove box is the same as the '63, I got a plastic SCAT one from one of the vendors that advertised in Hot VWs (or was that VW Trends). I drilled a hole in the bottom back so that the wires could enter/exit, and used a bracket to bolt down the stereo (this provided airflow around the bottom).

Note, it was a tight fit fore-to-aft, so, to keep the front from constantly hitting the glove box door, I got a small diameter (< 1/4") plastic hose (rubber hose would work too), cut it to a length so that it would fit all the way around the front, cut it length-wise on ONE SIDE ONLY (i.e. not cut in half, just a single, length-wise slice), and fit it along the face of the glove box before I put it into place. This effectively made the box a little bit deeper. This also served as a gasket to keep cold air out.

I believe I had to find a way to make the glove box strap fit this slightly longer setup. I will look in my driveway later and let you know what I did.

Thanks.. Anyone else interested in this subject.. I found the Hidden Stereo Glove Boxes online for $35 (EMPI). CIP1.com just listed them as a new item. They weren't on their the other day, that is where I was looking to begin with.

Nevermind, back to searching.. That glove box is only for the 68-77.

Nevermind? I have a '70. I'll surely get one after seeing what a drug addict will do to my dash just to steal my cheap stereo.

Just look at the pics and cry with me

You posted that before didn't you? That sucks. Good reason to park inside, if possible.

What happened to your padded dash?

Yes I posted it the day it happened. I've parked inside ever since. I bought the bug without the padded dash. The PO liked the early look.

I'm going to put a tear-gas bomb behind my CD plate, then stand 50 yards away with a camcorder. "Worlds stupidest thieves" material.

Hi All,

JC Whitney has a hidden stereo glove box and it states available for

54-79. It might be worth a look.

Found one for your model on ebay. More expensive though.

But why spend all the extra cash when you can simply fit a bracket in an inexpensive plastic glovebox and mount the stereo there? You could either make a shelf, or, maybe you could mount it so that the stereo is at the top, but if you have a deep stereo, you would have to look into mounting the glovebox upside down (so that the deeper portion is on top) if that is possible.

I have a radio safe that will work for the older DIN(?) radios. I don't think I will use/install it in my 70 Type 1 when I do restore it. It is basically a heavy metal cover that locks over the radio bracket...........and you should use it with a metal dash.
