Tires

Hi guys,

I have a 1971 standard beetle that needs tires. I want to get a more down front attitude by having different size tires front and rear.

Would 215/70R-15 fit under the fender of the stock rear suspension? It does have an anti roll bar installed. Also would 185/60R-15 alter my speedometer reading by much? What percentage?

Thanks.

Fweem.

I know you are looking for different sizes, but I wanted the standard

165R15 for my 68', and I had a hard time finding them. It seems the main manufacturer of these tires (at this point) is "Kumho". They are officially on National Backorder, and likely they will not be making any more of them.

I was able to track down some pretty old threads on this group (from

2003) on the topic of 165R15 tires shortages and I found most people found their tires at Sears.

So I went on over to Sears an hour or so ago, and ordered a set for $43.99 per tire. Of course, they had to be ordered, but I can wait a couple of days to get them. They had cheaper tires (down around $34) but they were all long since discontinued.

Anyhow, for the standard sizes, Sears is still the place. :-)

Yes, Ben, Cooper still makes the Mastercraft MR325 165-15 radial. My dealer does not have them in stock, but can order them. He quoted me US$203.00 for a set of four; mounted, balanced, front end alignment, state tax, federal excise tax and disposal fees included.

Sounds pretty good to me. They've worn very well on my car. I suspect they'll die of old age before mileage. I put maybe

The tires on my car now (a mix of about everything) are dying of old age as you put it. :-) They still have a good deal of tread left on them, but they sat for at least five years (probably more like seven) sitting in a garage. They are cracked, rotten, and starting to spring leaks! Hence my latest tire appointment.

Out of curiosity, where are you guys getting your Coopers? Are you in the US? Most of the dealers here in the midwest that I called threw their hands in the air when I gave them the specs. But I see that there is a lot of selection on 165R15's in Europe, the UK, etc.

I am reminded of the Muir book(s), which if you have one of the anniversary editions with the photo's in it, you will find many pictures of John Muir smoking. And for that matter, lot's of references in the book on smoking.

Noted. :-)

Well, he was a free spirited naturalist ... in Mexico.

I liked his whole spiel on "automatic chokes". He tells you to rip the damned things off and bolt them down locked open. And while you wait for your carb' to run smooth, you have time to light up a cigarette and enjoy it for a bit. He was one cool cat.

I was teaching some classes about a year and a half ago, and I had hours between classes, and no Internet Access. So I grabbed his book from my back seat and started reading it like a paperback novel. Lot's of humor in there. And for a non-mechanic like me he was able to make really technical stuff easy. Something I hope I can do in my line of work. He was a true inspiration.

Yes, but what dealer carried them? Out here (DFW) they are asking $15/tire to special order "Arizonian" tires.
