They let the fresh air in through two of the vents just under the windscreen, the one just in front of the steering wheel and the one in the same kind of place on the other side (above the glove box), the one in the middle is a warm air vent that is controlled with the levers by the handbrake. When you turn the knobs it should open and close the flaps inside the "box that the air blows into through the holes in the top of your bonnet while you are driving along" whatever thats called :).

There's no mistake in the German from either of you. Which is so uncommon for this group that I just had to mention it. ;-)

Volkswagen was always a pioneer, at the leading edge of the avant- garde.

That knob may be for self-recycling:

Turning it to the left will transform the vehicle into eco-friendly planters and fashion accessories, Twisting to the right will transform the vehicle into an anti-tank gun, small arms and a nice pair of size 42, shiny boots.

Those are the fresh air vent knobs for the dash. Turn them all the way to the left to open and all the way to the right to close the vents.

Open the trunk lid and check to see if the hoses are connected to the big black box in the middle, in front of the dash. There should be a hose on the left and right side of it. Turn both knobs to the left and go for a drive. Dampen your fingers and feel for air flow.

I put a piece of electrical tape over the lower vent on the left side so more air would come out the upper vent next to the windshield. This helps clear the foggy windshield.
