85 740 transmission swap

Suppose I had an 85 non-turbo non-od 740 with a bad (automatic) transmission, and a nice transmission (automatic) from a turbo 87 740. The 87 trans is 3 and some inches longer overall than the 85. How smart would it be to try to replace the 85 with the 87? Driveshaft shortening I can handle, but what would I run into regarding mounts, sensors, linkages and the like?

Just swap in the new trans and use the cross member and drive shaft from the donor. The kick down cabe bolts right up as well as the shifter linkage. If you have the donor car pull the gearshift assembly and link rod from it. Everything is a straight bolt up. The turbo trans is stronger.

Since the AW used in the non turbo is physically identical to the AW in the turbo, my guess is the original transmission is the ZF22, which would require a fair amount of modification to swap out. You'd need some way to control the overdrive solenoid, new or modified transmission cooler lines and the PRND21 shifter to replace the PRND321 shifter that the ZF type transmissions come with. And maybe some other stuff, I don't know as I've never done this.

Replace tt with t (twice!) and remove parentheses to email me directly. (But I check the newsgroup more often than this email address.)

All the wiring is there already, you just need the harness that goes under the car, the mounts and the interior shifter assembly.
