850 suddenly dies

Hi

I have a 93 volvo 850. For almost 3 years now I have had a very annoying problem. Sometimes when Im driving, the engine suddenly dies. I have to turn the key to off and pull over to the side of the road and wait for about 30 seconds. Then the car starts again and works fine. Same problem could happend 2 - 5 times the first 30 minutes. After using the car more then 30 - 40 min it works normal and have never stopped like the problem described above. But if I should stopp the engine for just one minute after been driving for, let say

2 hours the same problem could happen again the first 30 min after the re-start.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?

There have been many instances of this symptom in this newsgroup during the past... and indeed with my car! My fault turned out to be electrical-power related. I had a 10-CD changer installed and since then the fuel-relay kept cutting out. Disconnect the CD and all works fine. The garage initially diagnosed the problem as a vacuum hose collapsing, but I would imagine that would happen later in your journey as it warms up?!

Not quite the same symptoms, but my car would run fine some days, and then like you say, just cut out. It took to doing it on the motorway in the outside lane. Some times it would restart its self, like a bump starting, some times I would coast to the Hard Shoulder and it would start after a few minuets, but in the end it would take 15 or 20 mins to re-start. It was eventually found to be the Cam Sensor on the top of the engine, 2 bolts later it was all fixed and has been as good as gold for the last 8 months. By the way, it did end up showing in the Engine Diagnostic's, so it might be worth finding out how to read them, and then next time it happens pull straight over and get the code.
