88 740 : How to change AC compressor clutch.

Aug 05, 2003 3 Replies

Hayes manual refuses to deal with the AC ( European Version) other than sensors and those parts inside the passenger compartment. The clutch replacemen t should not effect the refrigeration circuit.

Are special tools required to change the AC compressor clutch. How long should the job take?

Thanks. Advice greatly appreciated.

You have to remove the bolt in the center of the clutch assembly, and a puller to pull the clutch off. It uses 3 bolts (6 mm) that go through the outside piece of the clutch. Then you find out the steel of the bearing is hopelessly seized onto the aluminum hub of the compressor. Then you can finally unscrew and remove the electromagnet windings. When you reassemble, make sure that you use the shims to set the gap between the 2 clutch surfaces properly.

Estimated time: 30 minutes if you have the right tools and there's no seizing on up to forever.
