940 volvo wagon has slight gas smell when starts on a cold morning also...has some knocking as well from underneath

Need help, Have 1994 turbo volvo wagon with the above described problems. Does anyone know or can guess what the issues might be? Thanks

I don't know if it applies to 940s, but my 95 854T had a recall notice last February for a gas odor problem.
