HID Upgrade for S80

Oct 09, 2005 3 Replies

I was wondering if anyone has tried any of the aftermarket HID kits available. I have a 2001 S80 and was noticing that the headlight bulbs were dimming a bit...so much so that I will be buying new lights soon. The cost of new H7s will run me only $50 for the set, but I have seen universal upgrade kits for cars in the $350. True, that is a lot of cash, but not if you're headed into a tree or ditch because our visibility was reduced.

Anyone have any advice or experience on this?

Thanks! G

Get new H7's for the S80... headlights dim with age, if the new lights are dim as well then there could be a wiring problem... Volvo's tend to have good headlights on them.

Don't get HID kits, they don't work properly - you need a proper self leveling system, not just a bulb and ballast/ignitor that retrofits into a standard reflector... you will blind other drivers and scatter light everywhere.

Daniel Stern used to post regularly to the Volvo newsgroup giving out heaps of first class advice. He is one of the best auto lighting specialists out there, it is well worth reading his site on HID upgrades.

If you are really still in a fix then why not drop him a line.

from dulling reflectors on older vehicles voltage drop is one of the worst enemies of deteriating headlight performance. Dirty contacts eat volts.
