Check the wiring harnesses at the door hinges. Pull back the rubber hose and check for broken, kinked or stretched wires. Fix 'em or replace the harness. Check groups.google.com for LOTS of discussion on the details of this.

I had the same problem about 4 years ago with my '96 Jetta. As it turned out my battery was on its last leg and needed to be replaced.

We're having the same problem, except the alarm won't go off without disconnecting the battery cables. When you reconnect the battery cables the alarms goes off again. We took off the black & red(s) wires that are inline with the battery cable wires then hooked up jumper cables to my toyota then hooked the battery up then hooked up the first cables we took off. It started then without the alarm going off. Yeah I know your pain what the F&$K! Took the boot that is in the driver door and there is a wire there with the insulation missing. We're going to fix that and see what happens. Where is the Alarm module I read about in another post? Also, the fuse that hooks up the trunk, sunroof and lighter blew. Could this have made the alarm go off

"Alarm goes off" is ambiguous. If you disconnect the battery cable and the alarm goes off, that would imply something different than reporting that your neighbor's alarm went off.
