A2 GTi starting problem

Feb 14, 2004 7 Replies

G'day,

I need some advise. My Golf suddenly won't start when I turn the key. No clicking sound, just the ignition lights on the dash are on. The battery is new, all the electric works eg. radio, clock, dashlights, etc. There are 3 things I could think of - starter motor, starter relay or the solenoid. I manage to push start it to get home.

Are there any tell tale signs if it is either of the 3 as mentioned above ?

cheers

If you don't hear anything chances are either the Clutch switch, Starter switch.

My 1997 passat it was the starter Switch. That's a real trip to replace. my key was getting warm. I sprayed some wd-40 into the starter switch to cool it off and was able to drive home. Also, on another occasion I was able to pull the wires off the starter switch and start it with a screw driver. I would have left it that way but my it made my wife unhappy. She called me an afro engineer.

If your car has passive restraint belts it might be the wiring mistakenly thinking you have your belt unbuckled from the door.

Clutch switch? WTF is that? If you're talking about something that makes you mash the clutch into the floor before you can start that car, the A2s did not have this.

Thanks to all, just found out that the starter motor came loose for some unknown reason.

On my '87 GLI, it was loose starter bolts, combined with oil-coated mounting surfaces causing intermittent no-starts. Cleaning, changing fasteners, and re-torquing solved the problem for good. Rex in Fort Worth

thanks m8, done it & saved me from buying a starter motor !
