I have taken my car to VW for everything needed on my 03 Jetta TDI so far but do not want to pay $400 for the 20,000 mile service coming up.
Any substitute would have to be good though. I don't want to take it to just anyone.

That sounds way high. Suggest calling another VW dealer...
Also live in St. Louis, for older cars Walter's Foreign in Brentwood is excellent - but I'm not too sure how they are with the newer VW's
Reid Vann is decent - and a little cheaper than the dealer but 400 dollars even from the dealer is pretty high. What are they doing for 400? An oil/filter change? Who's quoted you that price - someone in service or sales?
Yes, I should do that too. We have 3 here local that I know of.
