Chip for 2.0L?

So you want to replace the points with a solid-state ignition system, maybe upgrade from carbs to throttle-body injection while you're at it?

Actually, I am integrating Digifant I into my Beetle. Since alot of Digifant can be combined with the Jet-tronic Fuel Injection system used in newer, old Beetles, I can make Digifant I work with the carburetor. The Signal from the cylinder head temperature sensor provides the equivalent of the coolant temp sensor; the hall sender is utilised in the distributor, knock sensor is not used, rather a dummy signal is fed into the ECM based on RPM.

If all goes according to plan, I will have a '68 Beetle with OBD-I!

I was doing something similar with a 1976 914 2.0 that was in cherry condition. Before I could get around to installing everythin I moved to a house with no garage. That car CANNOT be made water-proof, and was manufactured out of recycled non-galvanized steel, so I sold it (and the un-installed upgrades) rather than see it get taken over by rust. Even garaged I had to go over the whole car every year and nail any little rust spots before they really got a hold.

A chip will not make much difference on a non-turbo car. Rather get a hot camshaft.

I have to disagree with you here. My 1990 Jetta GL is chipped and it is a non-turbo vehicle....the chip made all the differance in the world.

Can you back that up with facts and figures? I have seen figures on non-turbo vehicles which gain only 5 bhp or so and less then 10-20Nm of torque.

Well, when you have a three-speed automatic and a 100hp Digifant engine, any little gain is notable. In my case, the fuel economy got 100% better and the performance off the line was better as well...

OK, the one time I had a non-turbo chipped was not that successful. Perhaps you can give us the improvement in bhp figures for your 1990 Jetta. It would be interesting.

I was able to get an extra 150 kilometers of fuel mileage.

So, one thing I don't get - why are these chips OEM? if you could improve power and economy, why wouldn't the factory do it? It isn't like they are saving any money as scales of economy would make any bulk ordered chip cheaper than anything.

My suspicion is that these chips are either a rip-off or will decrease engine life.

Well, I think what it comes down to is emmissions....My theory is that with the chip, the engine may not be as clean burning as it would be normally, so maybe thats why???
