I'm considering buying the VW "factory" roof rack (cross-bars) for my 99 Passat and was wondering if it is compatible with either Thule or Yakima bike carriers,
Any comments/experiences appreciated, Roger

The VW factory rack is a Thule "European" aero style rack. The Thule, or Yakima stuff will not fit. Rather than pay through the nose for VW mounts, for my bikes I used Rocky Mounts Fork Mounts (cheaper than Thule, Yakima). I had to file away material to get them to fit up front and in back I used a carriage bolt upside down to fit in the channel.
