90.000km I used to replace the belt every 60.000km just to bes sure.

book says 60k miles my mate who is a greese monkey for audi says 45k miles.

In Europe, the first TDI's were introduced in 1989 by Audi. It was the
2.5 liter 5 cylinder TDI with 88 kW @ 4250 rpm and 265 Nm @ 2250 rpm. It was an Audi 100 which with this engine had a topspeed of 200km/h which was not so common those days with a diesel engine.Remco
The 1.6 is a strong engine and besides the 68 bhp there was allso a 80 bhp version here in Europe, it featured a watercooled turbo and an intercooler. It allso had an extra electrical waterpump which continued to run after you stopped the engine so that the turbo was cooled some more.
They can put out a lot of black smoke, but if your injectors are in good condition and everything is clean and the diesel fuel is of decent quality then they do not smoke so much.
In Germany there is/was a rally team which had a mk2 Golf 1.6 turbodiesel with 100kW of power, that is 136BHP and it ran on pure vegetable oil.... These 100kW is about the maximum for the 1.6 I think. A Bosch engineer once wrote that the injection pump for the 1.6 can deliver fuel for about 25kW per cylinder, the only problem would be to get enough air in the cylinders to get the amount of diesel to burn....

Correction it is a Mk1 GTD 70 bhp 1.6 turbodiesel.
