WHAT IS WITH JETTAS?

Consumer Reports are your backup? Give me a break. Consumer Reports is so heavily biased that their ratings cannot be trusted...isn't it odd when Honda is having major transmission issues that they are still top notch in reliability? But look at VW....driveline components are bullet-proof, but it's the electrical components that are troublesome. Even if I drove the worst VW, I would still rather be inside of it in a collision than a Honda. VW may not be super reliable, but they are safer than most of the Jap Crap on the market. Honda's and Toyota's are tinny and are designed to be cost effective....notice how VW has 4 airbags as standard, Honda only has 2. The Golf, Jetta, Passat, and New Beetle all have ABS as standard equipment...optional on the Corolla and Civic. ESP and ASR are not even available on the Civic and Corolla.

Sorry, but VW will always outperform Honda and Toyota when it comes to vehicular safety. I don't care what you say. If it wasn't for my parents '85 Jetta, I wouldn't be here right now. It saved both mine and my mother's lives after we were rear ended and the car spun around on the 401 and was hit again in a head-on collision....the police and rescue people both said had it not been for the Jetta, we would be dead. The driver of the 626 that hit us was killed. (I should mention that this accident took place in 1986 when the car was less than a year old...)

While CR has statistics on it's side, it's still a flawed system. My CR survey came less than 2 months after I bought my car, my mother and father always recieve their surveys inside the first 6 months. The only thing a CR "test" really indicates is good reliability for the first year of ownership. That said, Honda's are far from perfect, same as any car. I know someone driving an Accord with well over 100,000 miles on it. It runs, but it needs repair every month or so. My neighbor owns a Honda CR-V, 2 years old and nothing but problems since day 1. The fact of that matter is that a handful of people with problematic Hondas is no more indicitive of the whole brand than a few people who've had problems with Jettas.

The 2003 Accord had numoerous and well documented problems regarding the paint, the interior headliner, the window seals, and several other small things. While it's not massive in the sense that an exploding engine is massive, it's still certainly highly problematic. And these were *not* isolated cases.

I got nailed by some dumb bitch in a Chrysler while driving the 101 freeway in the rain. She nailed the front drivers side fender of my car and forced me into a spin (there was 1 inch + of water on the freeway). My car did a 180 across 2 lanes, slammed into a big rig, 180'd again and slid back across the freeway into the divider. If it hadn't been for the solid construction of my GTi, I'd be seriously hurt or dead. The driver's side curtain airbag kept my face from going through the window.

Once again you're rambling... CR does not just survey new cars (in first year)... they collect data on repairs for years after a car is produced. And again, Honda (and Toyota) surpass VW by leaps and bounds in reliability. Despite you "knowing someone with a problematic Honda."

But, those numbers are just the 'biased' CR statistics. You clearly are the biased one... I like my VW, but I know it's not nearly as reliable as a Honda... but I enjoy it, it's fun to drive, and I can fix most of what goes wrong. If you are gonna argue something as well documented as Honda's reliability ratings, then there is no having a logical discussion with you.

My mother has had her Lexus since December 30th of 2001. 6 weeks after we bought it she recieved and filled out a CR survey. We have not yet recieved another one. My father had his A4 for 5 years. He got a CR survey within a month of buying it and never saw another one. He bought his 4Runner in June, and has not recieved one yet. My car was purchased in December of 2001, I got my survey 2 months after buying it and have not yet seen another. It's been like this with every car my family has ever owned, and every car everyone I know has ever owned. I don't know what you're on about, but you seem to be the one doing the most rambling. The 2003 Accord has had numerous well documented problems. Accords and Odyssey minivans built between 1998 and 2001 tended to have severe transmission problems, as well as a fairly high instance of engine lockup. Again, this is well documented. If Hondas are more reliable than VWs, it's marginal.

Have you ever really looked at their numbers, though ?

I haven't for cars, but for others products I have and found many of them to be arbitrary and poorly done overall. They refuse to ever say "the margin of error is greater than the variance in our numbers" or "there's no good metrics for this product" and will instead simply pick some winners and losers, even if the numbers on which the picks are based are meaningless.

I still read it, but I think, like any publication, it shouldn't be taken as Gospel. Especially a survey, which is a very difficult thing to do well.

I really enjoy this kind of self reassuring that you were not a complete idiot when you threw out the window the dough buying a VW. I prefer to be a troll on VW ng and drive a Toyota than vice versa. Hardly, but thanks for playing. I was maintaining a safe speed of about 55 MPH. She came up on my left in the fast lane and punched the gas to get by me, apprantly so she could get off at the next exit. She lost control of her car and hit me within a matter of 2 or 3 seconds. With an inch of water on the freeway, panic-braking from 50+ would've caused more damage than what actually occured. You're just an angry little man aren't you?

You must live in either Simi or Moorpark. I'm betting Moorpark, somewhere near Los Angeles Avenue. No wonder you're so unhappy.

Google search for yourself an see. Seized engines and fallen transsmissions aren't new things when it comes to Accords and Odysseys. The 2003s have'nt suffered any major problems as of yet, but they have had a few key issues including bad factory paint jobs, bad window trim, and faulty headliners inside the car. Despite your wishes, Honda does not build a perfect car. In fact, in my experience, Toyota builds a much more solid product. And in 10 years, my VW will still be a nicer car than a Civic Si.
