Ford Corsair

Hi, I had a quick look at one of these today (the owner wasn't there and his wife couldn't find the keys). It's a 2-litre auto, V4 (I assume) column change, fly-off handbrake. Vinyl roof is torn in a couple of places, paint on the boot very faded, tinworm is starting to eat the bottom of one door, the arches and outside of one sill, but the interior is immaculate.

86k on the clock, condition of the interior makes me think it's genuine. Vinyl roof makes me think 2000E but no 'E' badges? BUT - on the driver's side behind the sill, a cross member (outrigger?) had a hole about 2" square. Is this something to be very worried about? Can it be patched? Or is it indicative of worse? And what else should I look out for if I decide to go back for a proper look?

TIA, Del.

Anything can be fixed, especially a little hole like you describe. V4 can be iffy, if you get a good one they are fine, but a rough one can consume money and time at a great rate.

We had loads of these in the late sixties and early seventies, they were pretty good or seemed so at the time, cheap car then and now.

Can't answer the above, Del, only to say that the vinyl roof could be an add-on. I know where there's a Corsair that may be available for spares if you do go ahead and buy.

I can honestly say that the WORST car I evr owned was a Ford corsair...a 65

2000GT V4 auto

Like the NYPD say about central park after dark...

You dont wanna go there...

Trust me I know.

Big Triumph is much nicer.

Column change is unusual on a 2000 most were floor change (hence the much misused 2000e gearbox tag), because of the gear change I suspect it isn't a

2000e any 2000e models I encountered were floor change ---- 2000e had no chrome strip along the body and seem to remember leather interior (which didn't wear well). 2000e were painted in metallic colours silver blue or gold or very occaisionally silver fox.

The V4 is prone to timing gear wear -- sometimes also head gasket and piston problems BUT if worst comes to worst you can stick in a Pinto, Xflo, or even a CVH (or Zetec !).

Most of the other parts are the same as late Mk1 Cortina with a few MK2 Cortina GT/1600e and Mk1 Capri bits mixed in Because the steering uses a cheap steering box they tend to wander a bit arround the straight ahead position due to wear, the brakes should be excellent

The OP said it was auto, so it seems correct to me that the selector is on the column, certainly my zodiac was, I don't remember any corsair/cortina autos personally, however I understand there was a problem if you overrevved the engine while in neutral, the torque converter flew apart or something, or was it that it overpressurised the seals and leaked?

Why does it always happento me? About three years ago I was going to buy a Mk3 Cortina 2000E. Turned out to have a shagged back axle. Not long ago, I'd saved enough to buy myself a P6. But then I was

*told* by the domestic authorities that we needed a new kitchen :o( And now I've found a Corsair and it looks OK, as a doing-upper. And what happens? I'VE LOST MY JOB!!!

Ah well :o(

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember Del The Obscure saying something like:

Sorry to hear that. Is there a bright side - like while you're between jobs you could get the car cheap, do it up and sell it on for a few quid...?

If you want, tell me where are you based and what you (want to) work at. It's a small country; I might hear of something.

Unfortunately not! He wants more than I can spare for it at the minute...still, it's been for sale for some time, so if I return to gainful employment fairly soon...

Thanks! Send me an addy to snipped-for-privacy@eircom.net and I'll let you know off group
