I think something bad happened to my transfer case. Went to drive it the other night and heard horible grinding sound. Stopped hearing it as soon as I got out of driveway. Now huge puddle of gear oil under case. Car drives fine with no noise in 2WD. Can it be drivewn in 2WD without functioning transfer case? Does transfer case move mechanically if not engaged? I know I will have to replace it eventually, but is it safe to drive as is?
