Disco - Replacement radio

I'm hoping someone on here knows about radios?

I've just had a new radio put into my 98 Disco (old style). Now the speaker in the rear door does not do anything - chap who did the fitting says that I need an amplifier to power this speaker, which was included in the original Phillips radio, but is not in the replacement Sony.

Looking in the Haynes manual, I see that there appears to be an amplifier in the back door, to run these speakers. Am I confusing two different 'amplifiers'? Or should the new radio send waves of sound out of all the speakers.

Thanks

I'd be interested to know too ... I have had a Sony Radio in my Disco since I bought it ... and the rear speakers have never worked, though they look to be wired up properly.

Most LR models dont have an amplified head unit, so a conventional amplified head unit wont work, as you are pumping the signal into another amplifier. they use door mounted power amps. What you need is a decent head unit with pre outs to enable useage with the amplifiers that LR use. They are usualy clarion or some other easy to get hold of make. You main problem will the the connectors for the head unit to speaker (unamped) cables. My amps are in the doors & subwoofer etc.

Better off sticking to original fitment, or get a good pioneer head unit with pre-outs.

AS Nige says the amp is in the rear door built into the speaker assembly as a separate detachable pack ( mail me if you want disassambly intructions) if your Sony has a preamp output it should have an RCA type socket(s) in addition to the ISO/ DIN plug. That needs to be connected to the wire to the amp have a look at

suspect its built into the ISO/DIN plug and if your eyesight is better than mine you may be able to read the wire names or hopefully this should be for your model

Good to know it ain't just me then. The radio that was in mine resmbled a chocolate tea-pot in functionality and is now swimming with the fishes.

Currenty using a radio I bought for the 110, but keeping an eagle eye out for something that will drive that rear door jobbie.

Anyone recommend a knowledgable supplier? FWIW - the chap I spoke to at sandtoft[1] appears to know his stuff. any others?
