Hi,
I'm looking at an X reg (2000) Nissan Micra 1.0 automatic on Saturday. Currently I drive a manual so I am fairly aware of the common issues with them, but is there anything particularly common that I should be aware of with automatics?
Thanks

My parents had an 02 one of these. The gearbox failed - I think it was a snapped band in the CVT unit - and the reconditioned replacement cost =A31600 + fitting. Honest John's review says "Previously reliable CVT started to develop same electromechanical clutch problems as Puntos. If it thumps when you move the lever to drive, or if the lever is hard to move, leave the car alone."
I understand that there were two different automatic gearboxes fitted
- I think the big difference is in the clutch.

My lady friend acquired a Y reg (2000) Nissan Micra 1.0 S a few years back with very low mileage. It has still done only about 6000, and to the best of my knowledge never been serviced, in spite of my pleadings, except for an oil and water change. In spite of this she has had no mechanical trouble whatsoever.
It is a fun little car to drive, I borrow it when mine is serviced, but she gets only the same mpg as I get from my 1.8 Mondeo, slightly less actually at 32 mpg. She mainly does short journeys, and because she lives on a slight hill the engine races for a while until on level ground.
Maybe it's the auto gearbox, so I'd be interested in what kind of mpg you get from the manual?
I've heard several times that the K11 (bubble) autos are good for around
70,000-80,000 miles and that's yer lot.Si
I get about 300 miles to the tankful on a 1.3 1996 model. If my maths is correct thats around 39 miles to the gallon? However, this could be its age or the fact that it's a bigger engine size
Hi Ian,
Thanks very much, this is appreciated! I believe they changed the Micras at around 2002 - this was when Renault parts started to be used as far as I know

Thanks, that sounds a better deal. ;-) I think the auto box is the main sinner.
Yup, generally. Either the commutator / brushes wear out, or the band snaps. they are generally un-economic to repair at that stage..
tim..
55+ mpg on longish runs, 45mpg or so on short trips.
That's a 1.0L manual.

Thanks, that is what I suspected. 32 mpg from a 1ltr engine is rubbish, but it's an easy-drive shopping trolley for her. :-) When we go anywhere together, we use my car.
